Getting Price Goat running

You'll need a Windows 10 or 11 PC, Google Chrome, your invite code, and about ten minutes. Thanks for helping us test.

  1. Run the installer

    Open the installer from your invite email. Windows will show a blue box that says "Windows protected your PC", because Price Goat is new and not yet signed with a paid certificate.

    Click More info, then Run anyway. That's expected during the test.

  2. Read the welcome screen and agree

    The first time Price Goat opens, it explains what testing means and what the app sends us, and shows the tester agreement. Tick the box (you must be 18 or older) and click Agree and start.

  3. Create your account

    Click Sign in at the top right, then New here? Create an account. Fill in your name, email and a password, and type your invite code (it looks like GOAT-7K2D-AE9F). We email you a 6-digit code from alerts@thepricegoat.com; enter it to finish.

    Can't find the email? Check your junk or spam folder, mark it Not junk, and add alerts@thepricegoat.com to your contacts. Your price-drop alerts come from the same address. To check they reach your inbox, open the Wishlist and click Send me a test email.

  4. Add the Price Goat extension to Chrome

    The extension lets Price Goat read prices from hundreds of stores at once. The Get Extension tab in the app walks you through it:

    • In Chrome, type chrome://extensions in the address bar and press Enter.
    • Turn on Developer mode (top right).
    • Click Load unpacked and choose the extension folder that came with Price Goat.
    • Keep Chrome open while you search. The tab in the app disappears once the extension connects.

  5. Set your location and search

    Click the ZIP code at the top right and enter yours, so local stores and weekly sales are for stores near you. Then search for anything: a brand, a model, or just "paper towels".

  6. Tell us when something's wrong

    This is the most useful thing you can do. Two ways:

    • The flag on a result (it shows when you point at a product, and next to each store's price): pick wrong price, wrong product, link doesn't work, picture, or out of stock.
    • The flag at the top of the app, "Report a problem", for anything else: a screen that won't load, a search that found nothing, a crash.

    Type a sentence; the app adds the details we need. You can choose to include a picture of the Price Goat window (only that window).

What to expect during the test

Some prices, stores or screens will be wrong or unfinished. Report them, and they get fixed for everyone.

Price Goat reads store websites through your own internet connection. Now and then a store may show a "are you a robot?" check, or skip a search. That's normal; the app moves on to the other stores.

Price Goat updates itself. You'll get new store fixes and improvements without doing anything.

Stopping the test

Uninstall Price Goat from Windows Settings → Apps, and click Remove on the extension at chrome://extensions. You can delete your account yourself in the app: top right → Account settings → Delete my account.
